Iraq "Friendly Fire"

posted 6th February, 2007 @ 17:21 by King Nutter *****

A US cockpit video has been released into the public domain of a "friendly fire" incident in Iraq which killed a British soldier. Popov36 is the A-10 tank buster aircraft who makes the engagement following military misinformation from his associates. If anyone can tell us what we're meant to be looking at here please leave a comment. Watch this video.

Yet more evidence that “Military Intelligence” is an oxymoron.

Most of what we are seeing is the heads-up display in the cockpit. That's what all the green stuff is. I also see a lot of sky and some ground, although most of it is towards the horizon. I think the black bar at the bottom (with the text of the audio) is blocking much of the ground view where the vehicles are located.

It appears the error was not with the pilot's they made quite a few efforts to determine that the truck they were looking at were not friendly. It is very sad. I feel bad for the family of the dead soldier. I also feel bad for the pilots. They seemed awfully distraught once they knew they had killed someone on our side.

Should be required viewing for mission controllers and pilots. The fliers seem properly restrained and cautious, but their commander's attitude appears to default to 'shoot first' in this confused situation.

But the real fault clearly lies with the IFF system - at some level the information just didn't get through about the friendlies being there. There must be something in place to handle this sort of thing - so what broke?
