The dress worn by Keira Knightley to this year's Oscars has raised £4,300 for Oxfam's East Africa Appeal. We could have brought you a much funnier headline if it has been her nightie that was being auctioned. If only people would think these things through.

Own Keira Knightley's Oscar Dress

Bid in Oxfam's Exclusive Auction for the East Africa Food Crisis

Keira Knightley was the star of the red carpet at the Oscars in a deep-claret taffeta silk gown designed by Vera Wang. She has now very generously offered this custom made dress to Oxfam to auction, with all proceeds going to support Oxfam’s life-saving work in East Africa.

The Dress

This dress is custom made by Vera Wang and made of bordeaux silk taffeta. It's a draped, one-shoulder gown with grand bottom flounce, in a British size 6, US size 4.

Knightley, who was nominated for Best Actress in Pride and Prejudice, wore the dress to the 2006 Oscars ceremony with a vintage 1960's Bulgari necklace. She said:

"This is such an amazing dress and I am really pleased to be able to donate it to Oxfam. I have seen the TV reports on the horrendous drought in East Africa and I know how desperate things have become, so I am happy to be able to do something to help."

Where will your money go?

All proceeds from the sale of the dress will go to Oxfam’s East African Food crisis appeal. Millions of people's lives are at risk in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Tanzania as they face the most devastating drought they have seen in years. In Kenya, Oxfam has been responding to the crisis for many months. We are providing extra food, water, and cash to over 250,000 people in the worst affected areas of Turkana and Wajir. In Somalia we are trucking water to communities in the southern districts, and repairing borewells to keep them functioning during this critical time before the rainy season begins in April. In Tanzania we are beginning a seed distribution to 20,000 households and are planning food distributions, veterinary services and an expanded school feeding programme to supplement this. We are also trucking water to communities in the Somali region of southern Ethiopia while we assess further needs.
