In 1956, a 21-year-old Elvis Presley would rise to international stardom. During this time Elvis lived at 1034 Audubon Drive, Memphis, TN.

1956 marked a significant time period in the eyes of the American public for a young would be king. Elvis purchased 1034 Audubon Drive with royalties earned from “Heartbreak Hotel”. This was a time of innocence, gracious southern living and the dawn of pop culture, as we know it today. During his 13 month stay at Audubon, Elvis became a multiple hit recording artist with RCA, movie star, teen idol, breadwinner for his immediate family (who resided with Elvis), heartbreaker, showstopper, award winner and ultimately homeowner with numerous additions and customizations to the property as designated by Elvis, which remain to this day.

Numerous photos were taken of Elvis, family friends and fans at this home, including iconic photos of Elvis on his Harley and by his famous pink Cadillac.

The original period mirror in Elvis first and front bedroom remains where Elvis would have checked his appearance in his stunning Nudie Gold Lame suit or his hair before leaving past adoring fans en-route to numerous appearances in Tupelo, New York and Hollywood.

In 2006 fans and original neighbors continue to tell stories of movie star friends Nick Adams and Natalie Wood, politicians and everyday people flocking to this residence for a glimpse of and hopefully autograph from Memphis own hometown boy. Young female fans would throw pennies at the front windows knowing Elvis was possibly lying in his bedroom at the front of the house. Eventually Elvis would take the back, larger bedroom for additional peace, quiet and privacy.

The property itself is a mature wooded residential lot (trees planted during Elvis stay). Wonderful shade is provided which prevents rapid grass growth in the front lawn! This is the lawn Elvis would pass football in when fans would appear by the carloads.

The backyard is peaceful with the original swimming pool and pool-house Elvis had constructed for family, friends and occasional fan enjoyment.

The single story structure approaches 3000 square feet of living space with four bedrooms and two and half baths. The Pool-House has been fitted with his and her showers, still showing the original tile work Elvis had commissioned. Elvis constructed a great room in the back of the residence, for additional lounging space and for recording. It showcases custom made star lighting, acoustical tile for recording purposes and display cases for anticipated awards! In the late 1960’s a bar and bar stool set was added by previous owners.

The hallway showcases the original music note themed wallpaper from 1956! It was uncovered during renovations by the current owners. The bathrooms still show the pastel colored countertops and tile you would expect in a 1950’s period home. Elvis was photographed in nearly every room including some of the multiple closets going through flashy store bought clothing. You can still see the attractive paneling and flooring as it existed during Elvis tenor here.

The walls and gates surrounding the property remain, still showing the strands of semi hidden barbed wire to prevent would be intruders as originally placed by Vernon, Elvis father!

On Apr-18-06 at 15:02:27 PDT, seller added the following information:

The neighborhood in which the Audubon Drive home is available is an “upscale” neighborhood with homes establishing past listings for sale in the $400,000 to $500,000 range. The “neighborhood profile” aspect is reflective of a large area in Memphis as a whole and non reflective of the precise vicinity of Audubon Drive as far as average home sales and income per household. All homes on Audubon and adjacent cross streets are on wooded established lots.

Please look for additional photos (interior) of 1034 Audubon this week. Naturally with a substantial investment pending we encourage in person tours of the home. We have had several inquiries from Nashville music industry personalities and therefore will be showing the home starting next week to qualified interested individuals. Please see “About Me” for additional websites pertaining to this historic property.

We apologize for the “shipping instructions”. Elvis Presley’s 1956 home shall remain at 1034 Audubon and not land under your Christmas tree anytime soon much to many peoples dismay!
